HISTORY OF THE ALGARVE INTERNATIONAL CIRCUIT

The Algarve International Circuit, also known as the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, is a premier racing venue located near Portimão in the Algarve region of Portugal.

Construction and Inauguration (2008)
Completed in just seven months, the circuit opened in 2008, showcasing its state-of-the-art facilities. It quickly gained recognition for its 4.653 km track featuring 16 turns and significant elevation changes, providing a challenging and thrilling experience for drivers and spectators alike​.

Design and Features
The circuit's design is inspired by legendary tracks like Nürburgring and Spa-Francorchamps, known for their undulating nature. The Algarve International Circuit combines high-speed straights with technical corners, making it a favourite among drivers. It has been praised for promoting good racing with ample opportunities for overtaking​.

Major Events
Since its inauguration, the circuit has hosted a variety of prestigious motorsport events. These include the MotoGP,  World Superbike Championship, the A1GP championship, the European Le Mans Series, FIA GT, WTCC, and GP2. The track achieved FIA Grade 1 status, allowing it to host Formula 1 events. In 2020 and 2021, it hosted the Formula 1 Portuguese Grand Prix.

MotoGP at Algarve International Circuit
MotoGP made its debut at the Algarve International Circuit in 2020, a year when the global pandemic led to numerous changes in the racing calendar. The circuit stepped in to host the Portuguese Grand Prix, which quickly became a highlight of the season due to its demanding layout and the enthusiasm of local fans.
