Driving Side

Drive on the right side of the road and overtake on the left.

Seat Belts

Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers, both in the front and back seats.

Speed Limits

Urban areas: 50 km/h (31 mph)
Rural roads: 90 km/h (56 mph)
Motorways: 120 km/h (75 mph)

Alcohol Limit

The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.05%. For professional drivers and those with less than three years of driving experience, the limit is 0.02%.

Use of Mobile Phones

Using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited unless using a hands-free system.

Child Safety

Children under 12 years must use appropriate child restraints and sit in the back seat.

Roundabouts

Vehicles inside the roundabout have the right of way. Always signal your exit.

Toll Roads

Many highways in Portugal are toll roads. Payment can be made at toll booths or electronically via a device (Via Verde).

Parking

Park only in designated areas. Unauthorised parking can result in fines or your car being towed.
